A trainee with BHSM does not just embark on a career; they become an integral part of our community. Jessica Russell, a current BHSM trainee shared her experience with BHSM noting how “the trainee programme is a great opportunity to not only create a strong foundation for a career advancement in law, but it also provides the opportunity to become part of a community that values growth and encourages personal and professional development.”

A typical day for a BHSM trainee is a dynamic blend of hands-on experience, exposure to diverse areas in the firm, and continuous learning opportunities. Jessica added that,

Nadine Cannon recently completed her training programme at BHSM and is now a qualified solicitor in our corporate team. She joined BHSM as an intern directly from college and noted how she “found that to be quite daunting, but the friendly, welcoming, and personable environment of BHSM put me at ease straight away and allowed me to relax into my role. I have been offered guidance and advice at every stage of my career, and I really believe that has allowed me to grow and develop at all stages of my training.”

The trainee programme at BHSM provides a comprehensive experience with rotations between departments, enhancing skill development and allowing trainees to tailor their career trajectories. Nadine highlighted how she’s,

“been fortunate to have worked in all departments in the firm, and at all times, I have felt supported by great teams who ensured that I received top-quality training and practical experience.”

Trainees at BHSM actively participate in client meetings, gaining exposure to the intricacies of client relations and developing crucial communication skills. This proactive engagement allows trainees to understand the client’s needs first-hand, ensuring that their work aligns seamlessly with the firm’s commitment to delivering unparalleled client service.

Stephen McVeigh, a recently qualified solicitor who joined BHSM in 2021 as a trainee solicitor shared how,

“as part of your training in BHSM, you get the opportunity to be client facing, which helps with understanding the matter at hand in more detail, seeing how to manage client relationships while also building valuable experience at an early stage in your career”.

We understand the importance of a balanced and enriching work life for our trainees and broader team. The BHSM experience extends beyond the office walls; our active social committee organises various events throughout the year, which are a great way to get to know colleagues and foster a sense of community. Stephen noted that “everyone in the firm is encouraged to get involved in the numerous BHSM social events. The trainees have monthly nights out which are always great fun. The activities have included comedy shows, escape rooms, mini golf, teppanyaki dinners and cinema nights.” 

Richard Lee, Trainee Partner at BHSM added that “A BHSM trainee receives the guidance needed to become a well-rounded solicitor.” He emphasized how “mentorship is a cornerstone of our training and the BHSM culture values individuality and empowers our people to achieve more”.
